Cross Connection & Backflow Testing

Cross Connections

The West Knox Utility District established a Cross Connection Control Program to comply with the rules and requirements set forth by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Division of Water Supply, which requires all water purveyors to provide the safest water possible.

This required the Utility to implement a policy that would best protect all customers in the West Knox Utility District jurisdiction from the possibility of contamination back siphoning into the water system.

West Knox Utility District’s Cross Connection Policy

Lawn Irrigation

West Knox Utility District requires that all customers with a lawn irrigation system have a reduced pressure backflow prevention device installed and tested initially and annually. Installation of all backflow prevention devices shall be in accordance with WKUD’s Cross Connection Control policy, specifications and all State regulations. The backflow prevention device must be before any tees or connections and shall be accessible at all times.

Commercial and Industrial

West Knox Utility District requires that all commercial and industrial facilities have a reduced pressure backflow prevention device installed and tested initially and annually. Installation of all backflow prevention devices shall be in accordance with WKUD’s Cross Connection Control policy, specifications and all State regulations. A reduced pressure backflow prevention device is required on all domestic water lines, lawn irrigation systems and before any tees or connections. A double- check backflow prevention device is required on all fire lines and fire systems.

Backflow Testing

Presently, West Knox Utility District charges $ 50.00 (fifty dollars) to test each backflow preventer. Alternately you may wish to have your backflow prevention device tested by someone else. This is permissible provided that the device is tested by a State certified technician or plumber. The test results and proof of certification shall then be forwarded to WKUD within 10 business days of the test.
